RTDs Drive Industry Growth as Total Beverage Alcohol Faces Continued Pressure in 2025, According to the 2026 Industry Overview

Minneapolis, Minn., (March 10, 2026) – The U.S. total beverage alcohol market in 2025 reflected a category landscape in transition, marked by shifting consumer preferences, uneven segment performance, and continued realignment of market share. Spirits maintained their leadership position at 42.4% share, extending their advantage over beer at 41.8%, while wine remained in a multi-year structural decline. Growth across total beverage alcohol was increasingly concentrated in Ready-to-Drink (RTD) formats, underscoring the industry’s accelerating pivot toward convenience, flavor innovation, and premium-led value creation.

According to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS), spirits expanded their share to 42.4%, widening the gap over beer and reinforcing long-term structural gains. However, the pace of expansion has moderated in recent years, signaling a potential inflection point. While total spirits volumes have not yet turned negative, without the contribution of RTDs the broader spirits category would have declined 2.7% in 2025.

RTDs have firmly established themselves as the growth engine of the U.S. spirit’s market. In 2025, spirits-based RTDs surged to 75.9 million 9-liter cases, capturing 24.4% of total distilled spirits volume—up 3.3 share points versus 2024—and now command more share than total whiskey. No other spirits segment is expanding at comparable pace or scale. The segment’s appeal lies in its simplicity and versatility, delivering flavor, portability, and consistency without the need for multiple ingredients or cocktail expertise. Its broad reach across occasions, price tiers, and demographics continue to drive incremental consumption.

Tequila extended its growth streak to 24 consecutive years in 2025, rising 0.9% to 31.6 million 9-liter cases. The category ranks as the third-largest distilled spirit in the U.S., holding a 10.2% share of total spirits, unchanged from 2024. Eight tequila brands rank among the top 50 spirits, though only half posted volume gains. Jose Cuervo slipped out of the top 10 overall but continues to lead the tequila segment, underscoring its enduring brand strength.

The U.S. wine industry, meanwhile, is undergoing a significant recalibration following nearly three decades of expansion. Total wine volume declined 3.1% in 2023 and fell an additional 4.5% in 2024 to 327.0 million 9-liter cases. In 2025, volume decreased another 3.8%, settling at 315.0 million 9-liter cases. The sustained contraction reflects demographic shifts, moderation trends, and intensifying competition from spirits and alternative formats, particularly among mid-tier bottled wines.

Despite broader softness, wine-based RTDs remain a notable bright spot. In 2025, the segment grew 10.1% versus 2024, reaching 6.8 million 9-liter cases. Though smaller than spirits-based RTDs, wine-based cocktails are steadily gaining share and capturing occasions that previously belonged to traditional bottled wine. High-growth brands such as BeatBox and BuzzBallz continue to resonate with younger legal-age consumers through bold flavors and occasion-driven positioning.

Beer faced renewed pressure in 2025, with domestic volumes declining 4.3% to 1.41 billion 2.25-gallon cases. The category’s share slipped to 41.8%, reflecting continued competition from spirits and RTD offerings. However, flavored malt beverages (FMBs) emerged as a growth driver within beer. FMBs increased 3.0% in case volume and gained 0.5 share points, reaching 5.9% market share and surpassing hard seltzers, which declined to 5.4%.

Collectively, 2025 underscores a marketplace defined by divergence. While legacy segments face structural headwinds, RTDs across both spirits and wine continue to capture momentum, reinforcing their role as the industry’s primary growth engine and a critical focal point for future investment and innovation.
